چکیده

Abstract. Deep persistent slab avalanches are capable of destroying infrastructure and usually unsurvivable for those who caught. Formation a snowpack conducive to deep is typically driven by meteorological conditions occurring in the beginning weeks months winter season, yet avalanche event may not occur several later. While predicting exact timing release difficult, onset activity commonly preceded rapid warming, heavy precipitation, or high winds. This work investigates synoptic drivers at three sites western USA with long records: Bridger Bowl, Montana; Jackson, Wyoming; Mammoth Mountain, California. We use self-organizing maps generate 20 types that summarize 5899 daily 500 mbar geopotential height winters (November–March) 1979/80–2017/18. For each locations, we identify major minor seasons analyze number days represented type during (November–January) seasons. also examine assigned 72 h preceding both dry wet events. Each exhibits unique distribution November–January period activity. identifies synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation patterns contributing instabilities precede By identifying these patterns, provide an improved understanding additional tool anticipate difficult-to-predict

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

Synoptic and mesoscale controls on the isotopic composition of precipitation in the western United States

We present a new event-scale catalog of stable isotopic measurements from 5 years of storm events at 4 sites in southern California, which is used to understand the storm to storm controls on the isotopic composition of precipitation and validate the event-scale performance of an isotope-enabled GCM simulation (IsoGSM) (Yoshimura et al. 2008). These analyses are motivated to improve the interpr...

Effects of winter atmospheric circulation on temporal and spatial variability in annual streamflow in the western United States

Winter mean 700-hectoPascal (hPa) height anomalies, representing the average atmospheric circulation during the snow season, are compared with annual streamflow measured at 140 streamgauges in the western United States. Correlation and anomaly pattern analyses are used to identify relationships between winter mean atmospheric circulation and temporal and spatial variability in annual streamflow...
